Installation
Choose a build
ShrimpNG is usually the right choice for Android 12 and newer. Choose Legacy for Android 8–11 and Huawei / Honor with EMUI or HarmonyOS 2–4. FOSS Calculator is the same client with a calculator name and icon.
Go to downloadsOpen the APK on your phone
Find the downloaded file in your browser downloads or file manager. If Android asks for permission to install from this source, allow it and return to the APK.
To update, install the new APK over the existing app. You do not need to uninstall the previous build; this keeps your settings.
Add a connection
The client works with subscriptions from different providers and with your own servers. You will need a link, QR code or configuration.
Copy the link
Open your provider’s page or server settings and copy the link to a subscription or individual connection.
Tap “Add”
The “Add” chip is at the end of the subscription row on the home screen. Choose import from clipboard. Use the scan option for a QR code or manual entry for your own settings.
Wait for the import
The subscription will have its own section and server list. If the list is empty, update the subscription and check that the link is still valid.
First connection
- Open your subscription and select a server from the list.
- Tap the large connection button on the home screen.
- Approve the Android system permission to create the connection.
- Wait for the status to change, then check an app or page.
You can test server latency in the app. Mark frequently used servers with a star to find them in favorites.
Choose apps
Open “Per-app proxy” in settings and enable app selection.
- Default mode: selected apps use the proxy; other apps connect directly.
- Bypass mode: selected apps connect directly; other apps use the proxy.
Use the “Rules” section for more precise settings. Routing depends on the selected mode and server configuration; provider configurations may include their own rules.
Compatibility
- Android 12 and newer: ShrimpNG or FOSS Calculator.
- Android 8–11: ShrimpNG Legacy.
- Huawei / Honor with EMUI or HarmonyOS 2–4: ShrimpNG Legacy.
- HarmonyOS NEXT (5.0+): not supported because it cannot run Android apps.
All three APKs include arm64-v8a and armeabi-v7a. No x86 builds are published. Legacy includes built-in palettes, but not Material You system colors.
Troubleshooting
The APK won’t install
Check your Android version first. The main build and FOSS Calculator require Android 12+; use Legacy for Android 8–11.
If the download is incomplete, download the file again. Updating an app from a different source may cause a signing key mismatch. Back up your settings before uninstalling the client.
The subscription was added, but there are no servers
Update the subscription and check that the link has not expired. Open your provider’s page and copy the link again: the account page and subscription may have different links.
Check the update result and app logs. Do not post your personal subscription link in a public chat.
The connection is on, but a page won’t open
Try another server and test latency. Check whether the app is excluded in app selection and which rules apply to its addresses.
A provider configuration may define its own routes. If the issue remains, save a short error log excerpt and contact the project chat or your provider.
The connection stops after sleep or in the background
Check Android background activity and battery settings. Some devices require you to allow the app to run in the background.
The client checks connectivity after sleep and network changes. Also make sure you are using the latest version.
Can I install two builds at once?
ShrimpNG, FOSS Calculator and Legacy share the same package. They install over each other, so only one build can be installed at a time. Switching between builds from this source keeps your settings.
Where do I get a subscription or server?
Use a subscription from a provider of your choice or your own server configuration. ShrimpNG is a universal client; you need to add your own connection.
